Cool People in Chairs: Emily Ramshaw of Texas Tribune

A “mover and shaker” is defined as “a powerful person who initiates events and influences people.”

We just call them, Cool People. In this series, we are catching up with some of Austin’s finest to ask them a few quick questions about the topic we love most—the Art of the Party.

Emily Ramshaw is editor-in-chief of The Texas Tribune. Under her leadership, the Tribune has won a Peabody Award, nine national Edward R. Murrow Awards, IRE’s Gannett Award for Innovation in Watchdog Journalism and eight honors from the Online News Association. The Texas APME named Emily its 2008 Star Reporter of the Year and she serves on the board of the Pulitzer Prize. Whew! If that isn’t cool, we don’t know what is.

Normally tackling more serious matters, we wanted to hear Emily’s lighthearted thoughts on the “art of the party”…

By the bar or on the dance floor?

Start at the bar to gain confidence for the dance floor.

What element at a party do you tend to notice most?

The flowers. And *comfortable* seating. I make a beeline for cushions and benches.

How does the word “design” play into your life and/or work?

I run a digital news organization, and we’re constantly thinking about how our web design helps or hinders our readers and community of members as they seek a deeper understanding of Texas. Design shouldn’t stand in their way!

What was the most memorable moment of your wedding?

Shoving pizza into our mouths in the limo as we pulled away from our glamorous wedding — bound for the after-party.
